My friend Hideaki Takamatsu will publish his photo book of The Big Issue Vendors "STREET PEOPLE". I can imagine it surprises many people at bookstores, even though I've just looked through its flyer and the ad card. Because it's not the one which exposes how hard life homeless people are forced. 友人の高松英昭さんが雑誌ビッグイシューの販売者を撮影した写真集「STREET PEOPLE」を出版する。私はまだ宣伝用チラシやハガキを見ただけだが、この本を書店で手に取った人達が意外に思うだろうと予想できる。この写真集はいわゆるホームレスの人々が強いられている過酷な生活を見せるためのものではないからだ。 Takamatsu has been shooting homeless people for more than a decade. He showed me the pictures of them at the day we first met. They were very serious and typical photojournalism. I couldn't see it without feeling his anger against social contradictions. 10 years later, I saw his new works appeared in a magazine Sekai, issued in December 2006, and I realized that I'd stereotyped him as one of the photographers who take homeless tragically. He was still shooting street people, but there wasn't sadness in the pictures. Changed into colored from B/W, they were filled with bright colors, like pink and yellow. He showed us the portraits of ordinary peoople whose lives are slightly different from us. 高松さんは長い間ホームレスを撮り続けている。私達が初めて会った時も、公園で生活する人々の写真を見せてくれた。それは典型的とも言える硬派な報道写真であり、若者が社会の矛盾に対して抱く怒りに満ちていた。 しかし10数年後、雑誌「世界」（2006年12月号）に掲載された高松さんの写真を見た時、私は無意識のうちに彼をホームレスを撮る人という型にはめて見ていた事に気付かされた。被写体は以前と変わらず路上生活者だったが、写真から悲壮感が消えていた。写真は白黒からカラーに変わり、ピンクや黄色など明るい色が溢れていた。そこにあるのは自分とは少し違う行き方をしている人達のポートレイトだった。 All the models of STREET PEOPLE are the Big Issue vendors. It's cool and cute that they are posing wearing the vendor's ID card. What happened to him? The friendship he's got after long years made his attitude changed, or he's trying to remove the prejudice against homeless? I can't get to the answer, but I'm sure it makes us feel that a lot of people are living in Japan like each of us. 今回出版される写真集のモデル達はみな雑誌ビッグイシューの販売者だ。身分証を首からさげポーズを撮る姿はバッチリ決まっていてかっこいい。長い年月を経て培った信頼関係が高松さんの写真を変えたのだろうか。または私達が持つ先入観への挑戦なのかもしれない。本人に直接聞いていないので真意はわからないが、日本のどこかに自分と同じように生きている人達が大勢いるんだと思わせてくれる作品だ。 The Big Issue doesn't accept the subscription, because its purpose is giving homeless people a chance to work. They sell 1 at 300 yen and get 160 yen as their income. Please buy Big Issue from the vendors. You can also support them through The Big Issue Japan Foundation. I registered as a Sleep-Tight Member(¥5,000/year). 雑誌ビッグイシューは定期購読を受け付けていない。販売者が路上で1冊300円で販売、売り上げのうち160円を彼らの収入とすることが目的だからだ。同時にビッグイシュー基金というプロジェクトも存在し、一般の人々も販売活動を支援することができる。私は年会費5,000円のぐっすり会員に登録してみた。 The special exhibition is being held in Osaka now.
